Surfactant flushing has been widely studied and tested for the removal of nonaqueous phase organic compounds from cont aminated soils and ground water aquifers. The removal of these organic contaminants is brought about by solubilization of them into surfactant micelles. Water recovered from extraction wells contains diluted flushing solution and organic contaminants. Treatment of this extracted water has to be provided to remove the surfactant and organics before discharge. Ultrafiltration (UF) is a technology that can concentrate micellar aggregates and their associated solutes, and liberate clean water in the permeate. When combined with other treatment technologies, such as steam stripping to remove volatile organics, UF treatment also can be used for micelle recovery.
