The Florida Design Initiative is a funded research project sponsored by the Florida Energy Office. The project investigators in effect serve as professional staff to a coalition of state agency personnel and design professionals within the State of Florida. This coalition, termed the Florida Design Initiative, was formed to promote "best practices" of design as a means of improving the energy efficiency and performance of state buildings. Specific activities to be undertaken by the Design Initiative during the two-year period from January 1994 through December 1995 include: meetings of state agency personnel to address means of obtaining more efficient buildings within the framework of the state procurement processes; joint meetings of state agency personnel and state design professionals to explore opportunities and impediments to the procurement of more efficient buildings; development of a High-Perform-ance Buildings Design Awards program to recognize examples of exemplary design effort; development of a needs assessment program to determine what Initiative efforts might be of assistance to practitioners in specific professional disciplines who are attempting to design better buildings; and the collection and packaging of information on energy-efficient and high-performance buildings for use by design professionals.
