The switching properties of SF/sub 6/ gas mixtures

Because of its high dielectric strength and superior switching properties, SF/sub 6/ gas has been widely used as an insulating medium in high voltage gas switches. At the same time, considerable research has been undertaken by electrical power engineers into the dielectric properties of SF/sub 6/ gas mixtures for use in circuit breaker and GIS applications. Many of the research findings from the latter studies are relevant to the switching characteristics of the gas. The work presented in this paper reports on the switching characteristics of SF/sub 6/ as compared to those of SF/sub 6/ gas mixtures. Results are presented on the dependence of jitter, delay and voltage collapse times on the gas composition.
