The broadcast industry is in the midst of a digital revolution. Media servers for broadcast applications are becoming more prevalent. As servers move towards the mainstream of video storage solutions, key advances in technology provide unlimited potential as capabilities and performance increase. In the future, the broadcast industry will be able to leverage from the computer industry. Media servers that utilize these technologies will be the core of the broadcast studio handling video and audio. As a result, there will be fundamental changes in the nature of how things are done. Disk-based systems will be the predominant storage medium. The paper outlines the benefits of server technology to provide a basis for why the industry should implement media servers in their applications. A perspective on the key technological drivers in the industry that will affect the future media server is given.
