Design of a course in artificial intelligence and expert systems

A model is described for the design and implementation of a new senior-level engineering course for the introduction of artificial intelligence and expert systems. The course is intended to provide an introduction to the most important concepts of artificial intelligence within forty contact hours. Students in the course were required to complete a term project which typically involved the design of an elementary expert system using an artificial-intelligence language. Some of the important issues involved in developing such a course include choice of topics, choice of computer languages and facilities, and the definition of term project assignments that can be completed in one term and yet be meaningful. Conclusions drawn after twice offering this course and suggestions for those involved in designing a course of this type are presented.
