DoA Estimation Results in 20-GHz Band Using Compressed Sensing

The 28-GHz band is used in the 5th generation mobile communication system (5G) [1]. In 5G, the introduction of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is being considered, and in an environment with large propagation loss such as that of millimeter waves, massive MIMO can realize beamforming according to the position of the terminal [1]. Therefore, it is important to understand the direction of arrival in the millimeter wave band. In this study, we conducted an experiment using a 48-element circular array in the 20 GHz band in the urban area of Niigata City, and also performed ray tracing assuming the same environment. In addition, we show the direction of arrival (DoA) estimation results using iterative reduction threshold algorithm (ISTA), which is based on compressed sensing. It is shown that the main path can be estimated by using ISTA even with approximately 5 elements.
