This paper investigates an axially segmented PMASynRM with hybrid rotor, which consists of synchronous reluctance rotor and surface-mounted rotor. Through extracting the permanent magnet from the multi-layered flux barriers and forming a single SPM rotor, the axially segmented SynRM well addresses the manufacturing problem existing in the traditional PMASynRM. Meanwhile, by optimizing the critical parameters in the hybrid rotor, the axially segmented PMASynRM can have a higher power density while keep the power factor constant compared with the traditional PMASynRM. Finally, the electromagnetic performance of the optimized axially segmented PMASynRM is compared with traditional PMASynRM, and it is proved the axially segmented PMASynRM has higher power density and power factor.
