To meet user requirements of higher dimensional accuracy of barand wire rod products, the development of sophisticated dimensioncontrol technology for continuous rolling has been desired. As a resultof basic research, a multivariable control system of interstand tensionand exit height of the material at each stand using roll speed and gapas input vector has been developed based on the continuous rolling modeland the optimal regulator theory. The validity of the multivariablecontrol technique was verified by computer simulation and model millexperimentation. This paper describes: (1) modeling; (2) control systemdesign; (3) computed results; (4) experimental results; and (5) aprecision bar rolling system which was practically implemented at thebar mill of Muroran Works, Nippon Steel, Japan, in 1990
