Traffic signal equipment and systems in the UK must be of a typeapproved by the Secretary of State for Transport. The procedures bywhich type approval may be sought are set out in the Department'sspecification MCG 0500. These procedures were last reviewed in the early1970s. The paper concerns a review of the procedures aimed at meetingthe needs to allow and encourage more innovation by industry; to reducethe risk of unsatisfactory equipment being marketed; to take account ofmaintenance of equipment by parties other than the originalmanufacturers; and to ensure that all parties involved have a clearunderstanding of the type approval and its meaning
