The growing negative tendencies changing Mongolian nature has ledto the undertaking of research work on ecological mapping and theoverall evaluation of the environmental situation as well as work on thecountry's natural resources. These studies were initially launched in1988 and are planned to be completed in 1993. The project is aimed atmapping human-made degradation which occurred in the Mongolian naturalenvironment on a scale 1:1,000,000 and 1:200,000 based on remote sensingdata. On the basis of the evaluations and results from this project, theauthors deem it is necessary to elaborate (in cooperation with allinterested foreign and national institutions) a scientificallywell-sounded concept of national ecologically critical situations indifferent regions of Mongolia and to put the resources management on anenvironmentally safe footing. The remote sensing based Mongolian naturalresources information system assembles available data on features of thenatural environment of Mongolia and was designed to assist decisions inpolicies on resource use on a central Asia continental scale
