Investigation on Coil End Effect of an IPMSM to the Output of VR Resolver

Accurate rotor position information is veryimportant in order to get a proper control of InteriorPermanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM). Error inthe rotor position information can cause torque ripple whichcan reduce the performance of IPMSM. One of the rotorposition sensor, Variable Reluctance (VR) resolver, usuallyplaced at a shaft of IPMSM, near its coil end. There is apossibility that leakage flux caused by input current at thecoil end influences the resolver output, the error in the rotorposition information is caused when the output beingconverted by Resolver to Digital Converter (RDC). In thispaper, the effect of the leakage flux caused by coil end isobserved. The coil end and its effect on the resolver wassimulated by using Finite Element Analysis, and its resultwas converted by using RDC that was simulated byMATLAB. After that, the output of the RDC is supplied tothe IPMSM control to see the effect to the performance.
