Brewers' spent grain (BSG) and spent cell yeast (SYC) are the wastes from mashing and fermentation process of beer, respectively. The compositions of BSG were hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin at 24.49±0.91 %, 20.86±0.60 % and 9.62±0.40 %, respectively. While those of SYC were protein, carbohydrate and lipids at 46.97±0.07%, 21.32±0.08% and 5.73±0.57%, respectively. The BSC and SYC loadings were varied at 5 - 24%. The optimal BSC loading was 15% which gave the maximum total sugar concentration of 33.76±0.67 g/L and nitrogen of 0.75±0.06 g/L while the optimal SYC loading was 24% which gave the maximum total sugar concentration of 62.12±0.15 g/L and nitrogen of 7.03±0.01 g/L. The total sugar concentration in the hydrolysate was adjusted to 40 g/L and used as nutrient sources for cultivation of three oleaginous yeasts, Trichosporonoides spathulata JU4-57, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa G43 and Yarrowia lipolytica TISTR 5151. The yeasts could grow and produce lipids at 1.10±0.03 g/L, 0.51±0.03 g/L and 0.83±0.08 g/L, respectively when using BSG hydrolysate and 1.07±0.03 g/L, 0.73±0.06 g/L and 1.13±0.06 g/L, respectively when using SYC hydrolysate.
