With increasing worldwide emphasis on Smart Grid applications, there is a corresponding need to consider the use of existing communications links. This paper discusses the various options for resolving thermal limitations in an urban distribution network and proposes that post-contingent load shedding may be economically used to secure the power system whilst also minimising the load at risk following credible contingencies. Interestingly, the use of SCADA as the primary Smart Grid communications channel is proposed for a post-contingent scheme in an urban network.
