A new kind of range image generation method based on mathematical morphology is proposed in this paper for complicated polyhedron in 3D space. In this method, laser points in point cloud of complicated polyhedron are firstly processed by gridding method. In procedure of processing, range values of laser points in grids are reasonably analyzed, and range image of laser points is acquired. Subsequently, using dilation and erosion algorithms, the close operation of mathematical morphology is implemented to the range image of laser points. At last, range image for complicated polyhedron is acquired. Compared to traditional range image generation method based on gridding method and interpolation algorithm, surface structure features of the complicated polyhedron can be expressed more reasonable by the proposed method. The proposed method is validated by using an experiment.
