Designing Healthcare Knowledge Management Systems – Development of an Integrated Component-Based KM Model for Effective Governance

Over the past decade, Knowledge Management (KM) in healthcare has become an essential and integral tool for efficient and effective governance of Healthcare Management Information Systems (HMIS) all over the globe [12]. As compared to developed countries, the developing countries are still facing challenges and problems to implement effective knowledge management procedures in Healthcare Information Systems due to many factors that impact directly or indirectly. Specifically, the public-sector healthcare in those developing countries that have huge populations is the center of emphasis and prominence [16]. This paper envisions and discusses the current situation of KM practices in public sector healthcare organizations of Pakistan. It proposes a component-based KM Model that integrates all the integral components of an effective KM system with an efficient KM process framework and escorts to enhance the integration and interoperability of the healthcare information system to improve governance and augment the successful implementation of KM in public sector healthcare organizations. Further, this component-based KM Model would help to improve decision-making process through enhanced KM procedures, integrated KM technical infrastructure and interoperable capabilities of the healthcare information system.
