Visual reasoning in design is facilitated by sketching. Thisresearch investigates how designers sketch, specifically analysing thephysical details of mark making. It relates the graphicalrepresentations to the abstract cognitive processes of architecturaldesign. A new form of protocol analysis has been developed using videoand computer records of designers' sketching activity. The analysis ofthe resulting data compares the designer's retrospective commentary andinterpretations of the sketching activity with the computer's record ofthat activity. The analysis will lead to a greater understanding of therelationships between `Design Events' and `Graphical Events' and thushow the notational activity of sketching supports the cognitive activityof conceptual design
