Considerations of Fault Current Infeed from Wind Turbine Generators

Over the last few years the wind power penetration in electrical grids has been rapidly growing in Russia. The reliability of wind power plants depends on its proper electrical equipment. Short-circuit study is a critical step for sizing the electrical equipment and setting the protection parameters. Wind turbine generator (WTG) infeed of the fault current depends on its type. The principles of the rough estimation of the fault current infeed from WTG Types 1 - 4 are presented in IEC 60909–0. The Russian Guidelines only consider WTG Type 1. The lack of statutory guidelines results in errors in sizing the electrical equipment. The analysis of fault current from WTG is presented in this article, including the parameters of WTG which influence the current infeed the most. Different approaches for fault current calculation are analyzed and recommendations for fault current infeed from WTG for the Russian Guidelines update are proposed.
