Settlement Analysis of a New Primary Crusher in the Peruvian Andes

A new primary crusher was built for a copper mine expansion project in the Peruvian Andes. The crusher is housed in a new reinforced concrete structure supported on a 1.8-m thick mat with rectangular plan dimensions of 19 m×38 m. A mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall of 30 m height was built around 3 sides of the crusher to facilitate the dumping of rock materials for crushing. A settlement monitoring system was installed on the crusher foundation, and monitoring started when the MSE wall was 10m high. The new crusher settlements were roughly estimated using the average anticipated loading on the crusher foundation prior to construction. The foundation soil parameters were extracted from SPT blow counts obtained from a hammer with non-standard weight. The measured settlements were smaller than the estimated. In this paper, the settlement calculation was performed using 3D simulation and it considered the MSE wall and crusher loading on the crusher foundation. The calculated settlements from 3D modeling are compared with the measured ones, and they are in reasonable agreement in four corners of the crusher foundation.
