The potential of optoelectronic hardware to achieve brain-scale neuromorphic computing is assessed. Both superconducting and semiconducting systems with direct optical synaptic connections are analyzed. The possibility of integrated memory, the potential for 3D integration, and the limits of optical communication for neural systems are highlighted.
