College English teaching for non-English majors in China’s higher vocational college has been mainly focused on teaching English for general purposes (EGP) for a long time, and has played an insignificant role for vocational talent cultivation. However, with the economic and industrial development, the competence of English application for graduates from higher vocational colleges is in need in Chinese enterprises for expanding international market. By applying the theory of needs analysis, this research made a massive online survey and conducted several interviews on the current situation of the demand on English learning for occupational purposes (EOP). Based on the data analysis by SPSS, combined the information that offered by vocational college professors, enterprise managers, and EOP and EGP teachers, the research found that it is of great significance for vocational college students to learn EOP, which will not only be beneficial for their future career promotion, but also important for enterprises to meet the international standards, and China’s industry structure transform and economic development. Suggestions, including, re-setting EOP course orientation, faculty integration, as well as online course construction, are proposed for English teaching reform for non¬English majors in Chinses vocational colleges.
