Due to lack of monitoring, many countries have faced pollution from malfunctioning onsite sanitation and open dumping of fecal sludge (FS) by informal emptying business (IEB). Monitoring of onsite sanitation facilities is very expensive, labor intensive and a big challenge especially in low- and middle-income countries where people mostly rely on onsite sanitation systems. Application of IoT, which could save labor load, is increasing in monitoring systems. We propose IoT-based safely managed onsite sanitation system to monitor and improve the function of onsite sanitation facilities, and to avoid open dumping by the IEB.
