One of the new techniques that has been proposed recently is Device-to-Device (D2D) communication to enhance the cellular network performance. The benefits of integrating D2D into the cellular network includes offloading wireless network, enhancing the spectrum efficiency, increasing the system throughput, decreasing the latency due to direct communication between devices and finally, providing energy savings at the BS. On the other hand, D2D communication imposes some issues that need to be addressed, for instance, mode selection, interference management, device discovery and resource allocation. Aiming at maximizing the throughput of D2D users while guaranteeing minimum data rate required for both CUs as well as D2D pairs, a mode selection approach for multiple D2D pairs is proposed in this paper. Three modes of transmission are considered cellular, dedicated and reuse mode. For each pair, the approach selects communication mode and the number of resources to be assigned to each pair. The performance of the mode selection mechanism is evaluated through extensive simulations and compared to the scenarios where only one mode of transmission is used. Simulation results show that the proposed approach achieves a better performance than both single transmission mode.
