The control system components and concepts presented in this paper were developed as part of a larger research project, funded through contract DE-FC04-2000AL67017, Parasitic Energy Loss Reduction and Enabling Technologies for Class 7/8 Trucks, with Sid Diamond, Technology Development Manager, U.S. Department of Energy, and awarded October 2000. Participating partners in the project included Caterpillar, Inc., Kenworth Truck Company, Engineered Machine Products, Inc., and Emerson Electric Company. Prototype electric accessory components were designed, fabricated, and integrated into a Kenworth T-2000 class 8 truck for proof of concept validation, fuel economy testing, and demonstration purposes.
