This paper describes the critical aspects of a National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) RA1901-01 project that has been contracted and is currently underway. The "Laser Scan to CAD Analysis" project will develop capabilities to capture and maintain current in-service ship configuration through the use of laser scan data overlay onto the Hull Planning Yard's (HPY) 3D product model. Configuration deviations, between the current ship arrangements and the HPY's 3D product model, will be analyzed and visually displayed in the 3D product model. This data/file compare application will generate real-time reports identifying added, modified or removed components/parts from the ships in-service configuration. Additionally, the project will develop capabilities to identify component label plate (alpha numeric) identifiers from the scan data. This information will be further used to compare compartment lists to scan configurations for changes. The combination of graphical and metadata analysis results, along with user visual review, will allow for the HPY's 3D product model updating to the current configuration necessary to support lifecycle activities. In effect, this process is maintaining a "digital twin" for the ship's virtual 3D product model and its current state physical configuration. (Figure #1). This project supports the NSRP's program goals to reduce total ownership costs of ships, and the Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) focus area of "increased application of digital technologies " by providing the Hull Planning Yard and the Navy the capability to accurately represent and assess the in-service ships configuration.
