As with most major projects, ensuring that the right people are in the right spot at the right time was really the most important factor in bringing this project to a successful conclusion. While the contribution of each team member was invaluable, the lead translator did a masterful job of learning and understanding the nuances of the original code. The user experience expert was relentless in her drive to perfect every detail of the user interface. And without the skill of the project manager, I fear this attempt at converting the code would have ended like all those previous, without a saleable product.Because of the increasing disfavor of VisualBasic, the time when a single engineer can sit down and create a complete, marketable stand-alone tool in a timely manner may be at an end. On the other hand, a team approach to software development that is well planned and emphasizes user feedback is undoubtably the best way to deliver a product that meets clients' needs. I would recommend the later approach to both archaic code translation and to new product development.
