A Technical Review on Developing BIM-Oriented Indoor Route Planning

Route planning inside buildings is critical for route optimization during daily indoor navigation and emergency response. Accurate spatial information to develop indoor route plans has become essential as buildings get bigger and more complex. Previous studies have proposed and developed different approaches to improve indoor route planning by using the building information modeling (BIM) technology as BIM can provide detailed semantic and geometric information. However, a comprehensive review of previous publications is still unavailable. This study reviews the relevant papers published from 2008 to 2018 to demonstrate the existing efforts on different stages of its development process, namely BIM preparation, navigation model generation, path-finding implementation, and applications. In addition, this study further conducts technical discussions and identifies potential research directions for future development. It is expected that from this study researchers can holistically understand the prior development trends of BIM-oriented indoor route planning and identify potential places for future work.
