Voltage Profile Enhancement in Middle District of Sudan Electric Grid Using Neplan® Software

In this study the voltage profile of middle district of Sudan Electric Grid is investigated. The transmission network along the middle district area serve a high power generated from Roseires Dam, Setete Hydro Power Station, Umdabakir Thermal Power Station, Ethiopian Interchange and deliver the supplied power to heavy industrial and residential areas in Maringan, Giad, Albagair and Soba through 220kV double circuits lines. These two routes between Showak-Giad and Umdabakir-jabelawlia suffer from excessive voltage drop when heavy loaded at peak load and flood season. For instance, three scenarios were taken to improve voltage profile of middle district. These are: (i) Add SVC at Maringan 220kV bus, (ii) Replacing the existing single conductor with bundle geometry, (iii) Add a new double circuit between Gadarif-Maringan. Power-Voltage (PV) and Reactive Power-Voltage (QV) curves plotted for each case to illustrate the paper problem, also load flow results and Voltage Change Index (VCI) used for comparison. The simulation was carry-out using NEPLANo software.
