Framework of a 3D BIM and Smart Device-Based Indoor Navigation System for Construction Management

To date, indoor navigation systems have been utilized in various areas, including optimal route planning, user tracking and exploration, and voice-based navigation along a route. To overcome the limitations of the global positioning system (GPS) in indoor environments, various indoor navigation systems have been developed using wi-fi, bluetooth, ultra-wideband (UWB), and radio-frequency identification (RFID). However, all these systems require the installation of additional devices to communicate with sensors. The popularity of smart devices, which have built-in sensors to track user movements, affords potential indoor navigation systems without requiring the installation of additional devices. This paper presents a framework for a three-dimensional (3D) building information modeling (BIM) and smart device-based indoor navigation system for construction management. A matching and interacting mechanism between the 3D BIM and the camera view that uses the smart device's built-in sensors is proposed to navigate indoor environments. The proposed framework is expected to be utilized in various construction projects and tasks.
