The Paper Industry's trend towards narrower actuator widths often requires non-linear maps that may be grade dependent to accurately control the profile. The creation of a map is often treated as an art with practitioners playing with the map until they like it. Existing tools often base results on a dearth of data and fail to adequately analyze the effectiveness of the map. The paper industry has no standards determining the accuracy of a map of when mapping is acceptable or not acceptable. This paper points out the weakness in industry practices and suggests solutions to develop indices that quantify mapping accuracy.
