We put a man on the moon. Most of that was done with automated processes, some manual oversight and technology that had never been thought of before. That was possible and successful, so, why does advanced process control for a paper machine feel like an almost insurmountable leap away from our current state of day-to-day running? We have great tools and process understanding at our fingertips already. Why isn't that enough? Maybe it's because we want to be on the moon right away and forget that "One small step for man" was the result of several, building-block steps that made the moon landing possible. Just like the journey to the moon, there are steps that can make the journey to advanced process control more likely to succeed. Data visualization platforms and predictive modelling are available in the market, but alone are merely rockets with a moving target. Actions, such as creating new measurements and data streams and incorporating Subject Matter Expert input allows the movement from stage to stage that can add value early in the process, engagement of members of the operation team and demonstrates progress. This condition can make the journey to advanced process control not only possible, but sustainable.
