A review of security challenges for control of access to Wi-Fi networks in tertiary institutions

Wireless networks are widely used in tertiary institutions as they provide greater flexibility and convenience. They extend the bandwidth availability for a university community. Improved availability allows for online classes, access to online resources from anywhere anytime. This has led to the adoption of the trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) in many tertiary institutions. BYOD covers all types of mobile devices that can be connected to Wi-Fi networks. However, controlling access to Wi-Fi has become a challenge in tertiary institutions due to the adoption of BYOD trend as large number of users connects multiple diverse mobile devices to campus wireless networks. The main objective of this paper is to present the landscape of security challenges presented to universities' wireless networks as a result of BYOD adoption. To understand the extent of the challenges, a desktop review and qualitative analysis of work carried out in this subject matter was employed as the research methodology.
