The main objective of this research is to investigate the possible use of L-band polarimetric SAR data to monitor sea ice in relatively thin sea ice area. By extracting polarimetric parameters at the sample sites in Lake Saroma, the backscattering characteristics for various ice types and open water were investigated. It was found that VV to HH backscattering ratio was sensitive to the difference of ice thickness, and the difference between open water and ice became larger at higher incidence angle. The scattering entropy of open water was lower than any other ice types even at the higher incidence angles.
