ON THE LOADING FACTOR OF RED-EDGE BAND

Land cover assessment is an important application for satellite multispectral images. The spectral characteristics of chlorophyll in red and infrared bands provide effective tool. Recently, red-edge band has been added into multispectral sensors, namely, RapidEye and WorldView II. This study utilized several scenes acquired with RapidEye in 2015 for learning the contribution of red-edge band. The coverage of these images are along the west coast of Taiwan. As a preliminary assessment, principle component analysis is performed to the multispectral bands. As a typical example, the analysis of one image shows that while the first two principle components count 72.9% and 23.9% each in terms of variance, the loading factors are 0.9296, 0.9829, 0.9477, 0.9023and 0.3167 for Blue (440-510 nm), Green (520-590 nm), Red (630-690 nm), Red-Edge (690-730 nm) and Near-Infrared (760-880 nm) respectively for the first principle component. For the second component, the loading factors are -0.2834, -0.1289, -0.2639, 0.3795 and 0.9407 respectively.
