1 NIST has partnered with NIJ to help the forensic science field address recommendations from the National Academy of Sciences 2009 report on forensic science. 2 NIST has undertaken work to make improvements in many areas of forensic evidence examination. 3 Our work will focus only on fiber trace evidence. 4 "Fibers associated with a crime... can be examined microscopically in the same way as hairs, and with the same limitations. However, fibers also can be analyzed using the tools of analytical chemistry, which provide a more solid scientific footing than the underlying morphological examination. ...
