The retrofit and analysis of the Winona Bridge, a 1940s-era historic through truss spanning the Mississippi Riveris described. The retrofit will allow the bridge to carry today’s heaviest permit loads with internal redundancy while preservingthe structure’s historic character. To maintain appearance, many members are retrofit with high-strength bars concealedwithin existing steel sections. This required complex nonlinear finite element analysis to establish that the high-strength barsperform as intended with existing steel.
