GO/PANI nanosheets were synthetized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA) analyses. Results of these experiments revealed that PANI layer was successfully synthesized on the GO sheets changing its surface nature into hydrophobic and increasing the interlayer distance. It was found that loading 0.1 wt.% GO-PANI into the epoxy composite resulted in significant improvement of the coating corrosion protection performance. The PANI layer enhanced the compatibility between the GO sheets and coating matrix providing proper dispersion leading to enhanced barrier properties. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis also confirmed that PANI layer deposition on the GO surface provided self-healing properties when there was a mechanical damge in the coating through forming passive layer on the micro-anodes.
