摘要

Low wind speed occurrences present a risk of temperature excursions beyond nominal limits on overhead lines particularly where these lines are operating close to or at capacity. The hazards of sags exceeding templating requirements are well known. A line drop on an aging conductor in a sheltered corridor highlights a potential risk of failure in highly sheltered locations where low wind speeds may be the norm rather than the exception. An analysis of low wind speed occurrences using data collected by a dynamic line rating system over one full year on a transmission line demonstrates the potential for sustained periods of calm or light winds under 1 m per second. The temperature excursion risk is also considered in the context of the existing Irish line rating basis with reference to statistical data from other sources.
