In the world of over seven billion people, more than 50% of people live in a city, and the numbers are quickly growing. This fast urbanization is putting significant strain on urban infrastructure. Cities are expected to enable efficient, sustainable water and energy systems that feed robust social and economic development. Urban performance currently depends not only on the city's existing infrastructure, but increasingly on the availability and quality of knowledge and data communication and social infrastructure. Urban sustainability requires the simultaneous consideration of closely coupled socio-economic, environmental and engineered systems for their long term viability. This paper will present the path towards deploying data infrastructure across the physical infrastructures in a City's domain, and linking the data to sources of innovation driving social and economic development. Several case studies will be discussed in detail.
