Effect of Nanometer Al and CuO on Light Radiation of KClO4/Zr Pyrotechnics

KClO4/Zr binary pyrotechnic mixture is a classical chemical pump light source for solid state lasers.Light radiation properties including the radiation energy distribution and flash duration are important considering factors for the application of laser pumping sources.The objective of this work was to examine the effect of adding nano Al and CuO powders on flame radiation property of KClO4/Zr.Flame radiation during combustion was measured using optical fiber spectrometer, photodiode combined with an oscilloscope.Results showed that nano Al and CuO played a different role in the combustion reactions.The flash duration decreased from 40 ms to 2 ms when Al addition increased from 1% to 4%, indicating the energy release rate of KClO4/Zr was significantly increased.However, after adding 2% nano Al, the released radiation energy within 420~950 nm and three absorption bands of Nd:YAG all decreased by over 24%.Addition of CuO led to the rise in peak radiation intensity and total radiation energy by more than 2 times, and also lengthened the flash duration by about 2times.The effect of CuO/A1 was moderate.The loss in radiation energy under high reaction rates might be caused by two reasons: first was the incomplete combustion induced by the increased combustion rates; and second was the ejection induced mass loss in the pyrotechnic pellets, so that the real mass of the compositions which participated in the combustion reaction decreased.
