Towards a definition of best practices for Model Based Systems Engineering in European Space Agency Projects

The use of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) has been steadily increasing at ESA in the last years with wide application both in a number of running projects, as well as in the early concept and feasibility studies within the ESA Concurrent Design Facility (CDF). The current paper outlines the progress toward a definition of best practices and guidelines for future ESA projects based on the experience gained by early adopters. These best practices are illustrated with examples from on-going projects and studies. To address the transformation to Digital Engineering from different perspective, a number of activities addressing the application of MBSE in the ESA environment are either completed or underway. These activities include: the methodology and relationship to ESA Systems Engineering practices, assessment of modelling needs along the lifecycle of projects, data continuity, modelling approach, interfaces and data exchange, and model usability to different stakeholders.
