Appliances – enforcement of MEPS and energy labelling requirements

MEPS and energy labelling of products can deliver a substantialpart of the energy efficiency target, which the EU has setfor 2020. Enforcement of regulations issued according to theEcodesign and the Energy labelling Directives is the soft spotin realizing the potential savings. The two Directives considerlaboratory tests as synonymous with market surveillance. Thispaper points out, that it is unrealistic to rely fully on laboratorytests, and it compares the outcome of markets surveillancewithin the Ecopliant project with national Danish experiences.The paper further outlines alternative ways of achieving anacceptable compliance rate, and outlines how improvementof energy efficiency knowledge among employees at retailorscan enhance the effect of the energy label among private consumers.
