Pursuing Environmental Excellence: A Balanced Scorecard Approach

Saudi Aramco, a fully integrated, global petroleum and chemicals enterprise, is the state-owned oil company of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Throughout our 80-year history we have become a world leader in hydrocarbons exploration, production, refining, distribution, shipping and marketing. As the national oil company of Saudi Arabia, protecting the environment is at the heart of our corporate citizenship responsibilities. In fact, Saudi Aramco's top environmental priority is to minimize the environmental impact of our operations. As a result of this commitment and dedication, and despite the significant expansion in the scale and scope of our company operations, our overall environmental footprint has continued to shrink in recent years. One of the many environmental initiatives undertaken by EPD to meet the company's commitment to corporate citizenship, with respect to the environment, is the FEP system, which ultimately translates into the President's Award for Environmental Excellence. The FEP system is a means to assess and rank Saudi Aramco organizations based on their accomplishments in four environmental categories: Performance, Compliance, Awareness and Training, and Environmental Initiatives. The FEP scoring methodology accommodates the diversity of Saudi Aramco operations and provides a reliable and repeatable method of indexing the facility's environmental performance. The outcomes of the President's Award over the last decade have been multifaceted. The award promotes an increased sense of Environmental Stewardship, provides a means to recognize and reward organizations with outstanding environmental performance, establishes a significant incentive for organizations to continuously reduce their environmental footprint, and is a tool to identify role model organizations from which other organizations can learn and grow. Most importantly, it's primary and underlying purpose is to affirm Saudi Aramco's position as custodian of the environment and effectively communicate the significance of that role company-wide.
