This paper addresses the issue of information management and knowledge-based decisions which are paramount for an efficient operation of smart grids. The ever-growing presence of new technologies, which are supporting novel operation strategies for users and utilities is investigated, based on data provided by real-life electrical power systems actors. Thus, consumption curves from a large customer were used, along with generation profiles for photovoltaic (PV), wind generation and electrode-boiler sources. The smart generation environment assessment will then be performed by taking into account various generation and consumption characteristics, designed to cover the majority of cases. The paper addressed the impact of distributed generation on both distribution systems operation and energy management systems.
