Due to the high surface area (>1200 m~2·g~(-1)), large pore volume (~1 cm~3·g~(-1)), well-defined and tunable pore size (1.5-10 nm), adjustable functionality and biocompatibility mesoporous silicas of MCM-41 type are widely used for biomedical applications. The most significant of them is controlled release of biologically active guest molecules. The retention of active substance in the pore volume of carrier and its delivery on demand can be achieved by chemical design of the pore walls and exterior surface of carrier. Interior surface of pore channels can be tailored with sufficient groups to selectively store active substances and deliver ones on demand. To gain control under the release processes construction of external stimuli responsible nanovalves on the outer surface of carrier particles can be realized.
