The effects of chlorine and chloramine on the microbial biomass and community structure in drinking water distribution system were studied with AR reactors. Chlorine alone as disinfectant achieved better disinfection efficiency than chloramine and the alternate disinfectants, with HPC lower by 3 log and 1log respectively when the biomass in biofilms reached pseudo steady state. Microbial population dynamics was analyzed with 16S rRNA based T-RFLP and revealed that the relative abundance of core populations in biofilm on the coupon didn't change substantially with biofilm growth in the two-month period. The most dominant T-RFs in biofilm and buck water were the same 88bp, and the subdominant T-RFs were 67bp, 493bp and 497bp. Pyrosequencing results also revealed that the relative abundance of predominant bacteria had regular change at class level compared with the control group indicating the bacterial group less sensitive to disinfectants deserve more attention.
