Chlorinated compounds: TCE (trichloroethylene) and PCE (tetrachloroethylene) act as a longterm sources of soil and groundwater contamination. These chemicals (DNAPLs: Dense NonaqueousPhase Liquids) are denser than water, so go down below the groundwater level. Inthe Republic of Korea, majority of big remediation projects are dealing with the petroleumhydrocarbon or heavy metal contaminated sites, and contamination of DNAPLs is reported ina few cases.In this research, the project at Korea military base to remedy DNAPL contamination wasevaluated in soil and groundwater. The results show that soil is contaminated with petroleumhydrocarbon (TPH, BTEX) and heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) and groundwater is TCEcontaminated.
