DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL NONPOINT SOURCE POLLUTION REDUCTION MEASURES IN KOREA

The per capita arable agricultural land in South Korea is smaller than other countries, due todensely population and many mountainous regions. Therefore, increasing agricultural land bytideland reclamation at Saemangeum watershed was planned and is being developed at theSaemangeum watershed. Saemangeum watershed is the largest agricultural area in SouthKorea, and has about 78.9% land use for agriculture except forest. Furthermore, a largenumber of livestock is produced in the watershed. Currently nonpoint source pollution loadingfrom agricultural area is estimated to be about 17%, 32%, and 25% of total BOD, T-N, andT-P loadings, respectively, in Saemangeum watershed. Scientifi c analysis through intensiveresearch for a long period of time is required for development of pollution reduction technology(best managements practices) in accordance with the characteristics of agricultural pollutionsource. In addition, development measures to improve system and policy for agriculturalnonpoint source pollution control is required. Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs(MAFRA) launched the ag-BMPs development program to support water quality improvementproject in Saemangeum reservoir and also reduce other agricultural nonpoint source pollutionsthroughout the country.
