Rural development policies are aimed at bringing more resilienceto the rural development programs by preserving natural resourcessuch as land and water and creating livelihood opportunities.Irrigation and drainage interventions provide multi-faceted benefi tsby providing adequate agricultural water, safe drinking water, andremoving excess surface and ground water, so as to ensuringadequate nutrition and thereby ensuring healthy environment forhumans. They also create job opportunities.Irrigation and drainage plays a crucial role in reducing agriculturalrisks and building resilience against climate variability. Irrigationand drainage policies therefore need to be based upon scientifi cprinciples and current as well as future land and water resources scenarios under changingglobal, including climate, scenarios. It is believed that improving irrigation and drainagesystems and rural development thereby increasing food production will play a key role inachieving food security and rural development, especially in the developing countries.
