Irrigation is a vital input in the agricultural productivity and agricultural growth. More than80 % of the water consumed worldwide is used in agriculture sector. However, the averageeffi ciency of its use is very low. With the fast growing population and national development,the water demand of various sectors is increasing day by day. It is felt necessary to improvethe existing low water use effi ciency in irrigation sector to cope up the increasing demand.The land and water resources are fi nite and scare. One of the important goals of Nation WaterMission is to increase water use effi ciency by 20%. Considering the fact that Irrigation sectoris the biggest consumer of water, the increase in water use effi ciency of Irrigation projects by20% is going to have a major impact on the overall availability of water not only for agriculturesector but also for other sectors of economy. Thus increasing the water use effi ciency ofexisting irrigation projects, projects under execution and contemplated for execution is of vitalimportance for maintaining food security and making available water for other developmentalneeds. In this paper the priority of measures are discussed on the basis of the successfulattempts made in these directions.
