Electro-osmotic consolidation has been proved to be an effective method to improve the soft soil and enhance the shear strength and stability of slope and embankment, especially for the soil with very low hydraulic conductivity. However, the previous theoretical analysis about electro-osmotic consolidation introduced the equal strain hypothesis in order to get the analytical solutions. In this paper, an axisymmetric electro-osmotic consolidation model without the hypothesis about the strain distribution was developed, and the analytical solutions were obtained. Afterwards, the numerical model was developed to compare with the previous analytical solutions and the proposed analytical solutions. The result indicates that the equal strain hypothesis can only be used when n, the ratio of the radius of the model to the radius of the EVD, is larger than 12.5. The comparison reveals that the developed numerical model can adequately describe the consolidation process. The proposed analytical solution in this paper can reflect the variation of the excess pore water pressure as well as the differential displacement.
